Reactions and Reviews
The title story, Shieldbearer, is the strongest story in the zine. Set in an alternate universe, it considers what would have happened if as a result of the events on Dimoris, Gary Mitchell had assumed command of tlie Enterprise with Kirk as his First Officer. Without giving away the plot, this is a real treat for relationship fans, and employs some interesting variations.
Strike Force, co-written with Gillian Fry, is a humorous sequel to Changeling. Nomad has had an unexpected effects of the Enterprise servo-drones. There are some nicely-observed situations, with a definite tendency to arouse the sympathy of the reader for the drones.
Like Steel to a Magnet depicts the effect of the link between Kirk and Spock, and shows it in use to save the lives of a landing party. It Is not an unusual theme, but is satisfyingly handled. Time Trek is a Star Trek/Time Tunnel crossover; as such it won't be to everyone's taste, but I'm told by someone who knows Time Tunnel that it is faithful to that series. It is well crafted in its own right, so from that point of view it works.
Two poems by Alan Boag complete the zine, with artwork by Raymond Sless and Maggie Symon. Strike Force and Like Steel are both convention fiction winners.
The zine is A4 format, clearly printed and easy to read, with a wrap-round cover. It is an excellent first independent zine by a very enjoyable author. [1]
