Shenghuo Xihua (生活西化, lit. life-westernized) is a term referred to homosexuality. The term is originally used on a review of Everything Everywhere All at Once published on Wenhui Bao, a state-run newspaper, to not directly mention homosexuality. Some Chinese fans who feel the term hilarious then adopt the term to describe homosexuality positively.

Origins

The term is originated from a review of the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once published on Wenhui Bao, a state-run newspaper, on 9 June 2022. The review summarized the plot of Everything Everywhere All at Once:

影片开始于美国华裔女性秀莲一团乱麻的家庭生活:经营多年的洗衣店因税务问题面临停业,丈夫悄悄准备了离婚协议,生活西化的女儿、老年痴呆的父亲等等令她头疼不已。有一天,一向怯懦的丈夫突然一本正经地告诉秀莲,她其实是全宇宙的拯救者。

The term Shenghuo Xihua is seen as an attempt to avoid directly mentioning homosexuality and indicate the narrative that homosexuality is a "western lifestyle". Some Chinese fans have found it hilarious.
