About

A fan in 2005 described and recced this series on Crack Van:

This is an AU series and like all of Jen's universes, this is a very detailed and descriptive world in which they live. Jen has summarized their world well in the notes of her stories. The series is set in a parallel universe, in which the Roman Empire never fell. In this world, Judaism, Christianity and Islam have never existed, or indeed any monotheistic religion. Same-sex marriages are legal and honourable. Slavery still exists. Prostitution is legal. People may behave in ways which would be offensive in our world, but perfectly acceptable in theirs. Starsky and Hutch have a complex relationship, in which Hutch is not entirely equal to Starsky, in a legal sense. Also, Hutch is a Shaman who can change his gender. It begins when Starsky and Hutch first meet and continues on until two years later, after much pain and heartbreak, joy and happiness. They are bound to one another and nothing will seperate them, even though they go through many trials along the way to prove how strong that bond is. [1]

The Stories

Summaries are by the author:

  • Seidhrman (This is the first part of a S/H Parallel Universe series. It is set in a universe in which the Roman Empire did not fall, but developed. Same sex relationships are not only legal, but respected, and honoured. Starsky and Hutch can be legally married in this world.)
  • Veneficus (Anything can happen, and does, so be prepared. Warnings: Bad language. Sex. Het sex, as well as Slash. Violence. Blood and body parts.)
  • Phantasma (Starsky and Hutch move to Rome to start their new life together. A mysterious prophesy shows them the way.)
  • Leprosus I: Carnifex (Starsky and Hutch solve a mystery. Their relationship continues to grow. Leprosus is set in a Parallel Universe. The characters may have opinions with which you do not agree.)
  • Leprosus II: Arac (A new enemy, and an old one, endanger the happiness of Starsky and Hutch.)
  • Erebus (Hutch has become a woman, for a time, and is having Starsky's baby.)
  • Judicium (Starsky and Hutch embark on a new family project. Starsky must make a difficult decision. So must Hutch.)
  • Interitus (Hutch is a Shaman, who has changed his gender in order to bear Starsky's child.)
  • Sacramentum (Hutch is a Seidhrman -- a Norwegian Shaman -- in this world. He can change his gender, and has given birth to a baby, fathered by Starsky. Starsky and Hutch have a complex relationship, in which Hutch is not entirely equal to Starsky in a legal sense.)
  • Janus (Short snippet for New Year's Day.)

Fan Comments

I have enjoyed a few of AU's a lot. The series 'Lost' by (crossing fingers)...Lynna Bright? And of course the 'Seidhrman' series at the Me n' Thee site that I *will* stop yacking about some day. But coincidently, I have the same hang up with both stories, and yes, it's along the lines of characterization.

I thought that the Starsky in Seidhrman was almost perfect. Macho, playful, practical, devoted, alternately placating and pissing off Hutch, dangerous, and brave in his world and quite spooked out in Hutch's spiritual dealings. But Hutch....was spotty. He kind of came and went. Sometimes he'd open his mouth and what came out would be so Hutch that I'd laugh out loud, but sometimes he'd disappear for pages, and the AU Hutch would wander around looking all exotic and mystic'y.

So then there's 'Lost'. Loved Hutch, Action Hutch, Wordly, conflicted, Tough Guy Hutch, and Starsky did befuddle him nicely, sweetly by refusing to be afraid of him or fight with him...but Starsky was innocent bordering on ignorant, and definitely much more religious than I ever caught any inkling of in his character...

(Oh! Little light going on! Ok, this may be what you were asking about above when I didn't understand the question about how the AU universe affects character.)

...The upbringing and background Bright supplied for her Starsky were sufficient to explain how he may have grown up with such a sheltered, even naive view of the world, might have made him so innocent, but this would mean that the AU has CHANGED the character's...um, character. Know what I mean?

Hm. Interesting point there for AU writers. AU's give you complete freedom for surroundings, but the backgrounds provided for each of the boys must allow for them to become the men we recognize as Starsky and Hutch lest we lose our central characters. Verrrry Interesting. [2]

So in the AU's that you've enjoyed, the author explained or showed how they got there? Again, I absolutely agree on the supreme importance of keeping S&H as recognizable personalities, or else why bother calling them S&H? But I'm not sure if we're on the same page regarding what just that entails. As an example, I'm really enjoying Jen Hall's 'Seidhrman' series. There is of course no way to tie that to Bay City, or cops, and there isn't anything that connects the series to the show except the guys themselves. But her Starsky? He is so PERFECTLY Starsky. His way of expressing himself, while not parrotting canon phrases and 70's slang, is just the right mix of cracks and observation and simplicity and intelligence, he IS Starsky. (What? Hutch?...uh, did I mention how on the nose Starsky is?) [3]
