A second-generation fan is a member of a fandom whose parents were also members of fandom; sometimes termed a fanspring.

A semi-common source of discourse which can arise is when younger members of a fandom become aware that their parents (or grandparents or other, older relatives) are in fandom spaces as well, sometimes in the same fandoms as they themselves[1][2]. One very popular post on r/Fanfiction was about an author who knew their mother was in the Star Trek fandom, but later came to learn about other fandoms she was in when they discovered one of their dedicated readers and commenters – including on the smut fics they wrote – was their mother[3].

K-Pop

The term has another use within K-Pop fandoms, where second generation fans is the term used for fans who got into K-Pop fandom for the groups started between 2003 and 2011[4][5].
