Reactions and Reviews
The reader confessed to being disappointed with this Classic zine. There's quite a lot (11) of Carole Mayberry's poetry, which despite sterling sentiments, differs from prose primarily in how it's laid out on the page. It also is often rather obscure. Example (from “Awakenings,” p. 46): As all our energies are awakened/In the pursuit of perfection/Self-beauty is acknowledged/By the beholders negativity./If not for a conscience,/Whence would we see the need/For self improvement? and (from “Power,” p. 78): Taking power from the heart,/Transferring it to the mind,/ Confronted by an honest truth,/Forces will definitely be defined. If you enjoy these verses, you probably will enjoy the zine as a whole more than the Q-fer reviewer did.On the up side, there are also three stories by the always readable Ann R. Brown. In the long, substantial, “A City Built to Music,” V/C help reunite two lovers (one is Kristopher Gentian) and help an oppressed girl find a reason to live; meanwhile Father, severely ill, extorts V's promise to break off his relationship with C. V's loneliness and sorrow are compounded by the demands of the community that fall on him as Father's stand-in. An intriguing and well executed story. In the brief “Until the Stars Had Run Away,” Olivia and Kanin's wedding leads to an unexpected encounter for lonely V. Also brief (and cute) is “Messy Jesse,” in which V/C try to understand why tunnel tyke Jesse refuses to bathe. Anna Deavers-Kelley's story “Once Upon a Time,” handsomely illustrated by the author, is a tale of kingdoms (V's a prince) full of tangled relationships: Gabriel is Paracelsus' bastard son, by Tamara; Paracelsus and King/Father are brothers; C is learning magic from “the old blind woman,” and Mouse is the jester. Devin is in love with Lady Diana, who has a loveless marriage to V. Suzi Dean's “Someone to Hold My Hand” is married C's reflection on how comforting that is. Carole Mayberry's “Devotion” tells of V/C's encounter with a strange runaway.
Other than computer graphics, the zine's only art is by Anna Deavers-Kelley.[1]
