Samurai Champloo is an anime directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, who previously achieved success with Cowboy Bebop. It is set in a version of Edo-era Japan heavily influenced by hip-hop music and style. The series ran for 26 episodes and featured a 2-volume manga adaptation.
Canon Overview
The series follows three protagonists as they travel together - Mugen, a brash former pirate and vagabond from the Ryukyu Islands; Jin, a stoic and reserved ronin; and Fuu, a young and spirited waitress. After Fuu saves them from an execution, she asks them to help her on a quest to find "the samurai who smells of sunflowers". The trio meet and interact with a variety of characters over the course of their journey, some actual historical figures of the period. However, the primary focus and development occurs between the three protagonists.
