I just read a long, plotty, intimate, almost-slash SGA fic called Salt of the Earth from dashamte = Dasha. It's lovely, the sort of wonderful, deep, unique, irreplacable intimacy between people that lets them talk about hard things and be there on bad days and take the blame and ask too much of each other and learn and accept failings and change each other's opinions and be patient and love. This is a great love story. It is also an unflinchingly painful tale of recovery and acceptance. PG-13 for mature themes, John & Rodney close friendship with Ronon, Teyla, Elizabeth, Carson and Radek friendships in there as well. [1]

One of the best h/c stories I've read, and one of my favorite fics in SGA fandom. Rodney gets severely injured offworld, and the story focuses on his convalescence. A 75,000 word story about McKay recovering from a stomach wound... and there's not one redundant sentence. It's a well-rounded story with interesting subplots, rich background detail, and fantastic characterization, not just of McKay. [2]

2010

I thought that getting the keys to the SG franchise crackvan so late would mean that nothing I love would be left to be rec'd. I was completely wrong.

Dasha is one of those authors (like Bujold or Heinlein) who makes you think her grocery list would be engaging reading, and she's been my gateway to several fandoms, including SGA (I first met John Sheppard and Rodney McKay in a Sentinel XO, to be rec'd later).

Salt of the Earth is Dasha at her finest; it's adventure, it's science fiction, it's unrequited love that stays unrequited (but that's okay!), and it has the best h/c scene I've ever read (beginning midway through the first part, if you don't want to be bothered with, yk, PLOT :-) ). [3]
