Rules of Engagement is a US sitcom about contemporary relationships, featuring a married couple, an engaged couple, and a single guy (later joined by his assistant).
Canon Summary
Rules of Engagement is a CBS sitcom about a group of friends comprised of three couples:
- Jeff and Audrey Bingham, an argumentative married couple of over a decade who is trying for a baby and ends up hiring a surrogate
- Adam Rhodes and Jennifer Morgan, a couple who at the beginning of the series get engaged and move in together, never quite making it to the altar until the finale
- Russell Dunbar, a single womanizer who in Season 3 hires Timmy Patel as his beleaguered assistant and then later marries him
The friends often meet up at the Island Diner to dish about their exploits or complain about their partners. Jeff and Audrey live down the hall from Adam and Jennifer, and Russell, Timmy, and Adam all work for Russell's father's real estate agency. Prominent recurring characters include Brenda, the Binghams' lesbian surrogate and a member of Jeff's softball team; Liz, Audrey's eccentric friend and neighbor who has a brief but passionate marriage to Russell; and Doreen, their put-upon waitress at the diner.

Rules of Engagement is primarily a casual fandom; it had viewership in the millions, and it airs frequently in syndication, but it has a very small fan community. The overwhelming majority of fanworks are created for slash pairing Russell/Timmy. Because of their working relationship, their enemies-to-lovers dynamic, and the fact that they are canonically married as of the series finale, many fans explore the animosity between them and the power imbalance of Russell being Timmy's boss, especially post-series.
