Rules of Engagement is a Stargate Atlantis McKay/Sheppard story by velocitygrass.

"Summary: Apparently, he was going to marry Rodney McKay."

Reactions and Reviews

2008

Rodney and John are back on Earth after the Atlantis mission ended, and Rodney feels it is finally time for him to pursue his real lifelong goal--winning the Nobel Prize. But he is missing one thing. A husband (because the uberf!institute with the best uber!lab won't hire him unless he can demonstrate some interpersonal skills, and to Rodney, that translated to a husband. Genius, really). And who else to ask other than dear old friend John Sheppard, who is getting nowhere in his Air Force career.

This is the perfect romance story suitable for pretty much everyone. In just under twenty-two thousand words, the author spins a clever story of marriage-of-convenience, misunderstandings (lots of angst!), family drama, and most importantly, love.Very likable Rodney and John, though John may seem somewhat out-of-character (or fanon?), and great supporting AND supportive secondary characters from the McKay/Sheppard households.

A story that will definitely lift up your spirits. Highly recommended. [1]

NC-17. First time. Fake/arranged marriage trope. Rodney needs a spouse to gain access to a lab. John has nothing better to do with Atlantis gone. Besides it's only for a few months, unless John has something to say about it. Pining!John and Oblivious!Rodney, my favorites. [2]

I’m a big fan of fake marriage fics. I can’t help it. I crave them. So it was no surprise that I did enjoy this story. Usually I would have found it a bit unrealistic that people would agree to get married for reasons like this, but let’s face it, Rodney would do anything to get closer to a Nobel prize. The tags say pining, but there isn’t too much pining involved. All in all, this is a really happy fic with a surprising lack of misunderstandings and plot twists. Did I love reading it nonetheless? I did. [3]>
