Empathy Press is a UK based fanzine publisher that began publishing Star Trek fanzines in the 1990s.
It was run by Morag Phillips.
In fact, for a short while there were two zine publishers in the UK by that name. One, Empathy Press started publishing in the 1970s and was run by members of the Empathy Star Trek Club. This press later changed its name to Empathy Publications.
In 1993, Morag Phillips posted an announcement in a UK newsletter indicating the name of the press changed to "Rosetta Productions":
The producers of the new Trek zine 'Let's See What's Out There .. would like In take this opportunity to explain the change in our press name from 'Empathy Press'.
Until January 1993 we were unaware of the existence of Empathy fan club. As soon as we became aware of that club's existence, we wrote to them regarding the coincidence of our names (unaware at that time that they also produced zines).
However, we received no reply or acknowledgement of our letters and concluded (correctly) that the club was defunct and that we would be free to use it. Five months after our letters to them, Empathy fan club (now calling itself Empathy Publications) wrote to us and suggested that we should change our name.
This we decided to do despite the fact that we were part of the way through a print run and had expended a large amount of time, money and effort in the production of artwork, logos, advertising and promotional material all including the 'Empathy Press' name; also despite the fact that by doing so we would seriously delay the launch of the zine (launched 3.7.93).
Our reason for changing our name, other than common courtesy, was in order to avoid being confused in any way with an organisation that takes so long to respond to its correspondence.
We hope that this clears up any confusion which may have already arisen through the similarity of names and the sudden change of our name, and prevents any future confusion. All other details pertaining to the fanzine Let's See What's Out There (ie contact addresses, persons involved, charity donations), all remain unchanged."[1]
