Rebecca is a Gothic mystery about a young woman who marries a wealthy man after a whirlwind romance, but finds his ancestral home, the Manderley estate, less than welcoming. In fannish spaces, the story is often popular for the femslash potential of Mrs Danvers, mainly with the late Rebecca de Winter but also with the story's unnamed narrator. On AO3, works shipping the narrator with her canonical husband are in the minority, and Mrs. Danvers/Narrator sometimes figures as a side ship or even the main event.

The novel has had a movie adaptatation by Hitchcock and a German language musical adaptation by Szylveszter Levay and Michael Kunze, later.
