Reality television is a television genre that documents unscripted situations and actual occurrences, and often features a previously unknown cast. The genre often highlights personal drama and conflict to a much greater extent than other unscripted television such as documentary shows. Subgenres include talent competitions, makeovers, dating, and lifestyle documentaries. Reality television has been criticized for being a misnomer--the situations, although unscripted, are engineered, and the participants are often coached in how to say their lines.
