Radical Remake is a game mod aimed at remaking Zoo Tycoon 2 with more realistic, updated designs and graphics, with the animals, foliage, and even the UI replaced by new models and assets.

The project was released in increments for nearly a decade, and successfully features remakes of most of the animals present in the base game, Endangered Animals, African Adventure, and Marine Mania. Only two creatures from Extinct Animals were ever released.

The last release from the project was the Western Bongo on 29th April 2020, and as of 2021 the Aurora Designs site is no longer online. Several animals have been left revealed but unreleased, including the Lion, Baird's Tapir, and Caribou.

Its release was incredibly influential in the fandom, and has lead to somewhat of a divide between fans who prefer an updated style for the game, and those who favour the original. Many other modders have since created their own remakes of various content, as well as alternate mods such as Folksy Facelift, which aims to remaster the game whilst staying true to the original artstyle.

History

Remake or Original?

I believe people started to move back to being faithful to the OG ZT2 style since this download has since been retired. It was fun moving onto the more realistic style while it lasted, but I kind of missed the OG ZT2 style because it's still nostalgic for me and I still think it just works. I'm glad that ZT2 mods are going back to being faithful to the game's original cartoony style, and that's the route I'm going with from now on. Planet Zoo is basically a much better version of this mod.[1]

Radical Remake was mandatory for teenage me, but now as an adult, I'm finding myself more and more nostalgic and appreciative of the cartoony aesthetic of the original game. Yet, also, it's getting long enough that I'm nostalgic of the remakes too! It's a dilemma.[2]
