Racefaking or race faking is the practice of faking or misrepresenting one's race/ethnicity/cultural background. This seems to be done to gain clout or position oneself as an expert on certain issues.
Examples of use:
- 2016 - What happened with hivliving - in which a white American writer admitted to sockpuppetting several accounts claiming to be two different people of colour living with HIV, potentially to give more legitimacy to their HIV-centric Hamilton high school AU.
- 2021 - Race as Social Capital: LGBTmazight’s Blatant Racefaking for Fandom Points - in which a fan from a multi-ethnic background was accused of exaggerating and/or fabricating aspects of her identity to better position herself as an expert on various ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities, depending on which fandom she was in at the time.
