"Napoleon escorted the ladies past the doorway and led the way to the bar. Behind its gleaming surface, two identical, shart-eyed women waited side-by-side beneath a pair of matching bobcats. The women had dark braids coiled tightly on their heads and white lace collars wrapped around their throats. napoleon put their age somewhere between forty and seventy-five.
"Miss Beaupre?" He used his smile. "Would you please provide these ladies with a refill of....whatever they're drinking?"
"Don't got no wood alcohol, one Miss Beaupre began.
"...but we can find some sloe gin I bet," the other finished.
That sounded good to the redhead, who blew him a kiss and fell in line for the drink. Napoleon scanned the room. He didn't find what he was looking for.
"Dis here be yours, cher." Beaupre passed him a glass. He sipped it cautiously. Bourbon, thank heavens.
"Thank you." He leaned against the bar. "Tell me," Napoleon glanced between them, "are you both Miss Beaupre?" He worked his smile again-the likable young rake. The sisters stared back-not fooled for an instant.
"Gauche," said the one on his right.
"Droit," said the one on his left.
"Nobody call us Beaupre but dem yats," Meaning the born-and-bred locals.
Napoleon took a ten-dollar bill out of his wallet. "I was wondering whether you've seen a man with a moustache tonight?"
Gauche slid the bill behind the bar. "No moustache, cher," she told him."
