Pride Con was planned as an LGBTQ-focused convention scheduled for July 29 - 30, 2016. However on July 18, 11 days before the convention, it was announced the event had been cancelled.[1]
Pride Con had two crowdfunding campaigns prior to its cancellation. The first was a Kickstarter campaign launched in August 2015, which met its fundraising goal of $15,000.[2] The second was an IndieGoGo campaign launched in July 2016, the same month the con was planned to take place, in which Pride Con claimed that the event would cost over $160,000 to run but they only had "just shy of $70,000". The campaign only raising $742 of their $60,000 goal.[3] and Pride Con was cancelled soon after.
The founders of Clexacon noted that Pride Con's cancellation made it harder for them to get guests in their first year of running as talent agents were more concerned about a new LGBTQ-focused convention such as theirs failing in a similar manner.
Links to other cancelled conventions
In 2018, Universal FanCon cancelled its convention a week before it was planned to take place, despite having run a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier to fund the event. Amidst the fallout of its cancellation people began to link one of its founding members, Thai Pham, with other cancelled and defunct conventions including Pride Con and TouhouCon.[4][5]
