Pirategasm was the first livejournal community created for Pirates of the Caribbean fanfiction. It was an all-incllusive community that welcomed both FPS and RPS.
1. ALL PAIRINGS/SHIPS/RPS/FPS/HET/SLASH are welcome here. This be an all-inclusive community. Furthermore, it is not acceptable to use headers as a tool to inspire or provoke shipwars, nor is it acceptable to use ANY OTHER MEANS to denigrate any particular 'ship or pairing. If the mere sight of a header featuring a slash story is likely to set you off, I respectfully suggest this is not the right forum for you. Repeat ALL-INCLUSIVE. Ten times. Good pirates![1]
History
Pirates of the Caribbean was a highly anticipated fandom, and there were already active livejournal communities for the fandom months before the movie was released.
It's been two years since Pirates of the Caribbean hit the theaters and in that time the fandom has grown massively and is still attracting new writers and readers alike. There are a plethora of PoTC communities these days, too many to keep track of, all these different places where different bits of the fandom hang out. But in the beginning there was one place for PoTC fic, pirategasm.[2]
Pirategasm was created on April 1, 2003, and the first Jack Sparrow/Will Turner fic, Revelatons by leggysluv was posted that same day.[3] Because the fic was written only with information gleaned from trailers and summaries, the characterizations the characterizations bear little resemblance to the characters in canon.
On May 4, Leggysluv also posted the first RPF fic in the community: Costume, an Orlando Bloom/Viggo Mortensen LotRPS fic set on the Pirates of the Caribbean set.[4]
There was a steady trickle of slash fic posted to the comm over the next several weeks. All of the slash was either Jack/Will or Will Turner/OMC.
The first het fic in the community, Island, an Orlando Bloom/Kiera Knightly ficlet by mcee, was posted on June 10th.
The movie opened in wide release on July 9th and there was an immediate upswing in posting beginning the next day. "The community went from 1 or 2 posts every couple days to 5 or 6 posts a day to 25 posts on July 18th alone." In July 2003 there were 290 posts to the community [5]
