Picrew is a paper-doll-like character creator website. It was released in 2018 by Japanese company TetraChroma Inc. Picrew allows any artist to draw and upload their art in layers to create their own character maker. Users can then create their own characters using the makers by selecting options from various categories, e.g. skin tone, hair styles, clothes, accessories, etc.
While not inherently fannish, fans will commonly use Picrew to create icons relating to their fandoms. This is frequently done by making their favourite characters, creating characters in the art style of a piece of media, or by creating OCs.
Criticism
A lot of western userbase has express disappointment over the lack of diversity in skin tones, facial features, and hair textures on some picrews, usually picrews created by East Asian userbases.
