Personality transplant is a pejorative term applied to characters acting unpleasantly out-of-character in fanfiction (or even in different parts of canon). It should not be confused with personality swap, a deliberate trope akin to body swap.
Example usage:
- "Sometimes stories that give a character a kid also give them a personality transplant too."[1]
- "But I can't stand the fics that purport to be period-specific, yet have the characters speak a more contemporary English and give them seeming personality transplants."[2]
- "The trailer still looks good, but the MCU has the inconsistency problem that plagues comics (different writers give characters personality transplants) in spades."[3]
- "By which I mean Rowling’s tendency to arbitrarily apply personality transplants at whim to her characters each time she reintroduced them."[4]
- "right now my head is exploding because Y&R characters are getting personality transplants every second episode"[5]
