Author's Comments
I started this at least two years before it was published, before I announced my retirement in November 2004. It was a spiritual story that I wanted to do. I had the “hospital” stuff written at the time I retired. I figured the story would never be finished. But as I ended up continuing to write, and since I didn’t lose those scenes in a hard drive crash (where I lost many other partially-written stories), it kept bugging me and I wanted to finish it. In the end, I wasn’t happy with how it jumped so much time between scenes, but I still felt compelled to post it. At times, I’ve felt I should apologize for how it’s written, but I still wanted it to exist. Well over a year later, the "reason" for this story became apparent. A lawyer I was friends with started telling me about an idea he had to begin an extremely high-level, secretive philanthropic organization. We weren't able to hash out the details of whether or not there could be a place for me, but as I drove home after that meeting, I wanted to cry at the beauty of his idea. Human beings can be so incredible sometimes. When I finally got the nerve to re-read this story many months later, I was astounded to realize how similar the Ellison Enterprises idea was to the idea my lawyer friend had. I had totally forgotten about the suggestion for employment that Steven had presented to Jim and Blair. Still doesn't change the fact that the it was an atrociously-plotted story, but now I know why it exists.[1]
