Palworld is an open-world monster-taming survival game with a twist. While it takes inspiration from games like Pokémon, it also incorporates darker themes and controversial mechanics, such as murder and slavery.
In Palworld, you can catch and befriend, or exploit, pals (the creatures in this universe) or humans. Pals can be injured, killed or even eaten, which has made this game not suitable for all audiences.
The game has experienced a fast rise to fame since its release due to a combination of things, like open world exploration and crafting system. Among the playerbase there are many Pokémon fans, who appreciate the blend of familiar Pokémon-like mechanics with survival elements and darker themes. Some Pokemon fans are critical of recent Pokemon titles and have found enjoyment in Palworld. On September 18th, 2024, Nintendo filed a patent lawsuit against Pocket Pair, the developer[1]. A statement was released on Twitter/X by @Palworld_EN giving what little details are available.[2] Nintendo's statement on the lawsuit, a corporate news release, announces the suit but gives no details on which patents the game has infringed.[3]
Though working through the recent lawsuit, Palworld has become available on the PlayStation5 as of September 24, 2024.[4]
