Outer Banks is a TV series that follows a group of teenage friends, John B., Kiara, Pope and JJ as they try to find the lost gold of the Royal Merchant shipwreck; an obsession of John B's missing father. Along the way, they enlist the help of Kook Princess Sarah Cameron and learn that Pope's ancestor was the only survivor of the Royal Merchant wreck and hid the gold on land. Their dangerous quest often brings them into conflict with the police, the wealthy Kooks and their own parents.
The series is set on an island town where there is a stark socio-economic divide between the Haves and the Have Nots. The wealthy residents of the island live on Figure Eight and are known as Kooks, while Pogues is the term used to describe working class residents that live in the Cut. Within the show, the main cast all refer to themselves as Pogues even though Sarah was originally a Kook Princess and Kiara grew up on wealthy side of town.

The Kooks vs. Pogues dynamic often appears in fanworks. Role Reversal is a common AU fic trope in the fandom. There are works that recast one of Pogues as a Kook, usually setting up Alternate First Meetings with the Pogues and an opposites attract romance. Reader Insert stories often use tags to distinguish between Kook Reader and Pogue Reader stories. There are also works that focus on Kie's Kook Year.
