Out of Tartarus is a charity zine featuring characters from the Supergiant video game, Hades.

About

Interest checks began in March 9, 2020 to March 30, 2020, while mod applications ran from March 17, 2020 to April 1, 2020. After mod applciations closed at the beginning of April, the project was announced to be on hiatus on April 21, 2020 due to the pandemic with the following message:

Hey guys! I’ve got a couple announcements for you all— but I’d like to precede this post first by thanking all the people who applied to help moderate this project, and apologize profusely in making you wait for the results.

Unfortunately, after careful deliberation, I’ve decided to postpone the project, as I’ve realized that running a zine amongst the current issue of the, you know, global plague. probably isn’t the wisest choice of action right now. I speak from experience when saying that it’s actually kind of A Bad Idea.

But don’t worry— Out of Tartarus will carry on, just a little bit later than originally planned. Thank you all again for sticking with me, and I hope you decide to stick around a little longer until we get back on our feet.[1]

On September 27, 2020, a separate announcement was made to announce the project's return by with a new interest check[2] that went until March 31, 2021.

Preorders opened on August 20, 2021 and closed September 19, 2021 with the following pricing tiers:

  • Tartarus ($15 USD) - PDF Zine, Emojis, Icons, Phone and Desktop Wallpaper
  • Asphodel ($25 USD) - Physical Zine, PDF Zine, Digital Merch
  • Elysium ($35 USD) - Physical Zine, PDF Zine, Digital Merch, Postcards, Die cut sticker, Sticker sheet
  • House of Hades ($50 USD) - Physical Zine, PDF Zine, Digital Merch, Postcards, Die cut sticker, Sticker sheet, Notepad, 2 Acrylic charms

The first 50 preorders came with an additional sticker as a bonus. Stretch goals included:

  • 100 orders - die cut sticker for all physical orders
  • 150 orders - washi tape for all full bundles
  • 200 orderes - foil cover for physical zine
  • 250 orders - enamel pin
  • 350 orders - hardcover for physical zine
  • 400 orders - acrylic standee

Orders were shipped out on March 5, 2022, while digital versions of the zine were sent out on May 4, 2022. Leftover sales lasted from May 22, 2022 to June 15, 2022.

On June 24, 2022, the project's social media page announced that they donated to $3,185 USD to the UNICEF Yemen Crisis Movement[3].
