Our Guiding Key is a digital zine organized in celebration of the 20th anniversary the Kingdom Hearts games.

About

On May 19, 2021, AnizinesInc, an account by Anizines for creating zines, announced that their next project would be related to Kingdom Hearts, along with a poll asking followers what the theme of the zine should be[1]. Followers voted for the theme to be a 20th anniversary.

The zine was formally announced contributor applications on May 26, 2021, with the working title Hearts Intertwined: A KH 20th Anniversary Zine[2]. This zine would be free, digital, and open for all to join[3]. Artists, writers, and merch artists could apply until June 30, 2021. The organizers reported over 100 contributors had applied[4]. By July 20, 92 people were confirmed to be on the zine[5].

Due to overlapping titles with Hearts Entwined, another Kingdom Hearts zine, the title was announced on July 8th to be changed to whichever followers voted on[6]. Our Guiding Key was the winning title against other options such as Connected, Unwavering Hearts, and The Ties That Bind Us.

The zine was originally meant to be released on January 31, 2022, but was delayed to February 4th due to undisclosed circumstances[7]. As promised, Our Guiding Key was released for free on Gumroad with an option to donate money that would be given to the organizer's chosen charity, Make A Wish[8]. However, the organizaers announced the next day to be migrating from Gumroad to itch.io in response to Gumroad's breach of customer privacy[9]. The zine was re-released on itch.io on February 10, 2022[10].

The organizers announced on February 18, 2022, that $70.12 made from the zine was donated to Make A Wish[11].
