Other Kinds of Things is a Jim/Blair story by Helen.

Reactions and Reviews

Helen deserves special commendation for never writing anything below 50k or NC-17. That's my kind of writer--oh wait, and she's fucking good...

Why you should read this story: Incomparable dialogue that uses deadpan style to laugh-out-loud effect, and the subtle but immensely satisfying pleasures of 'guy slash', in which men act like men.

What might throw you off stride: Need I even say it? Helen's punctuation and style choices are unique. You either accept her house rules or eat your slash somewhere else. Me, I'm all for it. Nice to see a story once in a while that doesn't look like every other story.[1]

Another story from the slightly older favorites folder is Other kinds of things by Helen, a Sentinel story with a great title and some great dialogue between Jim and Blair and some pretty nifty non-verbal action between Jim and Blair, too.[2]

Summary: While on stakeout, Jim confesses to Blair that he has a "thing" for Blair, but doesn't want to talk about it. Coincidentally, or perhaps on purpose because Jim probably heard the bad guys coming, the case cracks with the usual activity. As a result, Blair doesn't get a chance to say or do anything about Jim's declaration.

Over the next days, Blair tries to figure out this latest Jim-speak while honoring Jim's request not to discuss it, but that doesn't keep his imagination from running wild. Jim continues to brood and wonder why Blair is, for once, being patient when he normally jumps into Jim's problems with both feet. Meanwhile, Jim continues to have sentinel dreams that he wishes he could suppress, and Jim's spirit animal is prodding Jim to spill his guts. Things come to a head, literally, but it doesn't solve the problem--yet.

Reccer's Notes: In canon, Jim and Blair's lives ended up being so entangled that it was hard to know whether there was any line that they wouldn't cross for each other. That's especially true for Blair when it comes to Jim's sentinel issues. Helen really addresses that here. Enjoy. [3]
