An onmyouji (陰陽師, lit. master of Ying and Yang) is a practitioner of onmyōdō (陰陽道, engl.: The Way of Ying and Yang, sometimes also referred to as onmyoujutsu, 陰陽術, Ying and Yang technique), a form of traditional Japanese esoteric occultism. Onmyouji are often depicted using their knowledge for divination, the exorcism of spirits, and the use of magical creatures called shikigami (式神).
Visually, they are often depicted to wear kariginu (狩衣) - a semi-formal attire for aristocratic men in the Heian period.
Famous historical onmyouiji include Kamo no Yasunori and Abe no Seimei. The latter especially became a figure of popular culture texts during the Seimei Boom.
