Ah, Andreas Volpe - he who wandered into a Due South alley, patted down Ray Kowalski and got a bullet for his troubles. The author has woven together a first meeting for Volpe and Kowalski from a failed arrest - dealing sugar on the streets of Chicago! - in Kowalski's first days at the 27th. This Volpe is smart, confident and smooth - his voice and attitude particularly well done for someone so briefly alive - but with the underlying steel of a criminal with aspirations. Kowalski is his somewhat edgy self, circling Volpe like a moth towards a flame. Welsh, the background and the criminal plot are all well crafted and concludes with a wary truce between the two. [1]
