Once Upon a Turnabout is a charity fanzine featuring characters from the Ace Attorney game series in a fantasy or fairy tale setting. While the zine primarily featured Ace Attorney characters, this also included the Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game, meaning that the project was also a crossover with Professor Layton.

About

Interest checks for the zine opened on May 24, 2022, and were scheduled to end on June 4, 2022[1]. The zine would be safe for work, although some darker themes and depictions of violence were allowed to some extent. Applicants would also be screened for hateful or discriminatory activities by the zine organizers, and any applicants found creating content that the organizers deemed offensive would not be accepted[2]. The zine was originally slated to be free in digital format but could be considered for physical printing with merch depending on the results of a secondary interest check[3]. Interest check results were posted on June 24, 2022, reporting a total of 299 responses[4].

Once it was decided that the project would also see a physical print release, mod applications for finance, shipping, and production were open from June 1, 2022, to June 29, 2022[5]. This deadline was cut early to June 22, 2022, instead[6]. Mod applications results were sent out on June 26, 2022[7]. Contributor applications for artists and writers were opened from July 1, 2022, to July 31, 2022[8]. Application results were sent out on August 12, 2022[9].

During the creation period, the zine organizers ran Choose Your Own Turnabout, a choose-your-own-adventure campaign in which a series of comics about a fictional harvest festival where the game's characters would wear masks[10]. These comics were released with polls so fans could vote for certain aspects of the story.

Preorders opened from February 14, 2023, to April 17, 2023, with the following pricing tiers[11]:

A giveaway for a full bundle was organized during preorders via a series of puzzles posted on the project's carrd website[13]. Fans were encouraged to try solve the puzzles themselves and check their answer on the website for steps on how to enter the giveaway. As reward for completing the puzzles, an additional sticker was added to all preorders. The winner of the giveaway was announced on April 16, 2023 to be Twitter user SerAtlantisite[14].

Shipping began on September 21, 2023[15]. All physical orders were shipped out by October 12, 2023[16]. The zine's store reopened from January 12, 2024, to February 12, 2024, for leftovers[17]. On March 5, 2024, the project's organizer posted a receipt of the donated $1032 USD to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, and the project was declared complete[18].

Been thinking about what Phoenix would ask for the end of the @onceupon_zine puzzles and the best I have come up with is “So what was the deal with Kristoph’s black psyche locks anyway?”[19]

@onceupon_zine The puzzles were so fun to crack, amazing job! it felt so satisfying to complete them :D

I wonder… I feel like Phoenix might ask the mirror “Does my spikey hair look good?” And would take it super personally depending on the answer HAHA[20]

@onceupon_zine The puzzles were so fun to complete! I feel like Phoenix would totally blank and just blurt something out. But after some thought, maybe he'd ask "if I ever make a bad decision, will I still have someone who supports me?"[21]
