Reactions and Reviews

God, how I love this story! And what a treat to have Penny Proctor doing some fine J/C again! This was a response to a challenge, and a most excellent response it is. Penny gives us the Janeway and Chakotay that the powers that be could never bring themselves to give us after the first few seasons. Romantic and touching, Oasis shows a Kathryn Janeway who isn't afraid to risk speaking the truth and a Chakotay who always knew it. They are friends, and I believe it. The ease and love these two characters show as they try to survive in the desert is just wonderfully drawn. And the ending...it's great! I hope to see more of these wonderfully romantic J/C stories by Penny next year! [1]

With one of the most beautiful and emotionally moving J/C stories of the year, Penny once again displays her mastery with this couple, and the unique bond--and transcendent love--that they shared. [2]

Just as Rocky did in "Night Visitor," Penny suckered me with this story. The ending did what such endings are supposed to do (at least, when presented by a writer as good as Penny): it both surprised me and felt completely inevitable. [3]

This story was written to answer a challenge on Enterprise and Beyond, and it was fascinating to see Penny take the framework of the challenge (put your favorite pair in the crossing the desert scenario from an Enterprise Episode) and make of it something so different from the other stories posted, so very much her own. And as always, it's wonderful to read Janeway and Chakotay in Penny's hands. The twist gave me a shiver, it was absolutely not what I was expecting (yet the story played fair with the reader) and I loved that. I loved the double meaning to the title and I really love those last lines. It was great to see this glimpse of the "original" Voyager timeline before it was changed in Endgame. Penny really suggested a lot about Janeway and the background to the story in a very compact way. I also loved how Penny handled characters such as Kim and the Doctor here. Just a lovely story, truly a treat. [4]

A really beautiful story and a perfect response to the desert crossing challenge. This is quintessential Janeway - stubborn and determined. Nice work. [5]

Nothing stands in the way of Penny's writing well-crafted, well-plotted J/C fic - not even death. She does so much here with dialogue alone, going over Janeway's past emotions and decisions while keeping the story going in the present vivid desert. The ending took me completely by surprise the first time I read it. Thanks for a lovely fic. [6]

I was doing good up until Harry and the Doc talked to her in sickbay. I like the fact that she's an admiral, and still in charge of Voygaer. And at least some of her old crew are still with her. Now that I think about it, it could have been Harry as Captain and he's just ferrying her around. Regardless of who's in charge, it was a well-written story that made me feel warm inside and then get all misty eyed. A good story. [7]

Another of the excellent responses to the challenge to rewrite Enterprise's "Desert Crossing" in another series. Very romantic, and I definitely didn't see the twist at the end coming. [8]
