None Can Quite Extinguish is a John/Rodney Stargate Atlantis story by Cate.

Summary

"Unwilling to accept that Sateda has been destroyed, Ronon -- newly aided by the citizens of Atlantis -- convinces Weir to let him visit his homeworld and see things for himself. Accompanied by Teyla, Sheppard and McKay, he discovers that just over a hundred Satedans survived the culling of the planet, eking out life amid the ruins the Wraith left behind, taking care to breathe no word of their existence to anyone else.

Despite a rocky beginning to their relationship, the Lanteans attempt to help the Satedans flourish - an undertaking that's hampered by distrust, resistance, and factionalism among those who survived. Amid this, Rodney meets Caius, the 21 year old best hope for a scientist the Satedans can offer, and the role of science in destroying and rebuilding worlds becomes a point of contention for everyone involved - Satedans and Lanteans alike."

Reactions and Reviews

Turns out Sateda isn't quite as dead as everyone thought, though the survivors are few and rife with conflict. The majority of this story is about Atlantis's attempts to help return the Satedans to self-sufficiency, which is tougher than it sounds thanks to the increasingly strident political strife within the tiny Satedan community. Then you get the whole Doranda incident and the subsequent angst (yay!), and that's just the beginning of Atlantis's troubles... As expected from Cate, the writing is beautiful and the plot interesting (especially if you are a fan of survival!fic and/or political intrigue). The story is populated with OC's, not a one of whom is even remotely Mary Sue-ish; my favorite is Caius, who is sort of like a mini-Rodney, only nicer. Best of all is the Atlantis characterizations, all of which are spot on (especially Ronon, who is discovering that he isn't the only one left after all, and John, who is discovering his feelings for Rodney). In fact, my only problem with the fic is that the post-Doranda segment is (say it with me) too short. The Doranda debacle is so critical (and so full of potential) that it deserves an epic length story all its own (and any recommendations of stories that fit that criteria would be very much appreciated). All in all, a good solid read. [1]

This is a look at how things might have gone if there had been more survivors of Sateda, who then stayed on the planet. It has great world-building, and the internal politics of Sateda and the Genii in this story are interesting.[2]

One of the only Big Bang stories I've read without speeding up towards the end. A marvelous story that explores the tensions between science as weapon and as helpful progress; brings to life the ragtag survivors of Sateda with their wariness and splintering factions; diverges and converges with canon; gradually develops John and Rodney's relationship; provides a fantastic depiction of John taking charge under siege; and explicitly and hauntingly compares Sateda and the Genii and Doranda to Hiroshima.[3]
