From the editorial:

Welcome to "NO SHADOW OF ANOTHER", a fanzine dedicated to all the Australian fans of the series "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST." Preparing this zine has been a labour of love (and countless hours on the phone) for both Marie and myself This is our fisrt [sic] attempt at producing a whole fanzine, and we have had plenty of support, for which we are very grateful. We were also thrilled to discover several talented writers and artists amongst those who receive our newsletter, "THE CRYSTAL CONNECTION", and we have used some of their work in this book.

The stories in this collection embrace all three seasons as well as moving beyond them to the realm of what might have been. As in all creative work, the only limit is one's imagination and. as Vincent often says, "with love all things are possible." We would like to take this opportunity to especially thank Lynn Henricks for her stunning cover art and the picture of Vincent, and also Kathy Fidge for her seemingly endless supply of inspired drawings. Please note that the artwork in this zine was intentionally printed on single sided paper, we feel it is better this way, so don't panic if you see a blank page .... if there is a drawing on the other side, it was intentional!

We hope you enjoy "NO SHADOW OF ANOTHER" and would be most interested to receive letters of comment. Keeping the dream alive (and hoping for a movie!).

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

Pleasant, uncomplicated stories and poetry, the fiction mostly by Bozovic and Tillott. Some of the stories are post-third season, but although Diana appears in some of them, it's only in a context of friendship, the focus being Catherine's return, either having miraculously survived, or as a ghost, or inhabiting Diana's body once Diana no longer has any need of it, having been attacked (and presumably killed) in the park. Other stories are set earlier in the series. Much of the fiction here is vignettes—pleasant enough, but not going much of anywhere. Two are more substantial: long, and fully worked out, dramatically. Tillott's "Brotherly Love" has Charles' brother Eddie abducting Catherine and a severely injured Vincent; Bozovic's "Always" reworks material from "Though Lovers Be Lost..." in a way that avoids Catherine's abduction and allows her to tell Vincent her glad news of the coming baby. In Lynda Jones' story "A New Beginning" comatose Catherine revives and is reunited with Vincent. Overall, the editing/proofing/word choice could have been better, but it's still readable. [1]

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 2

Some material here ("Operation Mousetrap" and "Reebok-Eteer," both by Charlotte Asanovski) was later reprinted in the New Zealand zine, Tales of the Dream (which see). And Robert Mirnik's "Full Circle" was expanded into his zine Reflections (which see). As in the previous volume, mostly vignettes rather than fully worked-out stories. For instance, in the amusing "Reebok-eteer," Vincent appreciates Catherine's gift of running shoes so much that, as they run together, he leaves her in the dust. And that's In Marie Tillott's "An Auspicious Occasion," injured Vincent is grumpy, then gets better when Catherine nurses him. And that's it. But other stories have a little more substance—for instance, in Sue Portier's "The Dream," a magic amulet gives Vincent a fully human body, but when Catherine is in jeopardy, he finds the Beast is needed, after all. So overall, the zine is a blend of sketches, fragments, and more substantial pieces, with slightly more typos and iffy word-choice than usual, but still readable. Some of the stories involve third and/or fourth season material, and in some of them, Catherine is dead and stays that way; but there's no mention, anywhere, of Diana. Fiction contributors are Sue Portier, Robert Mirnik, Glenys Walker, Asanovski, Joan Larkin, Marie Tillott, Jenny Bozovic, Joan Larkin, Edwina Harvey, Elaine Mills, Anne George. Handsome art by Kathy Fidge, Lyn Henricks (particularly good), Georgina Gould. Poetry by Asanovski ("The Poem He Never Wrote," a love poem to Catherine's feet, is really funny) and Joan Larkin. [2]
