Nerdcore is a musical genre defined largely by its subject matter: "topics of interest to nerds." Typically, nerdcore music is in the hiphop space, but can range widely in style from rap to pop to rock. In nerdcore, the musicians themselves tend to be fans of the subject matter of their music, but also the musicians have their own fans and fan communities focused on their work.
History
The genre was originally defined by musician MC Frontalot, whose raps are filled with numerous references to nerd/geek culture. He used the term in the song "Nerdcore Hiphop" in 2000 to describe the music of himself and his peers, and the term "nerdcore" started to be used widely after that.
Starting in the late 2010s, a notable large subgenre and subcommunity of Nerdcore developed that is also often referred to as Anime Rap. This community contains artists like Rustage and Daddyphatsnaps, and also contains artists who are not rappers themselves, who will regularly feature as vocalists on others' songs or feature other artists on their own songs.
