Neko Atsume (ねこあつめ; "Kitty Collector") is a 2014 mobile game developed and released by Hit-Point Co., Ltd. Gameplay consists of offering goods and toys to attract outdoor cats, who enter and exit the player's yard when the game is closed.
In 2015, Neko Atsume went viral on social media, with commentators attributing the game's popularity to its simple gameplay loop and art style. This sudden popularity was accompanied by a surge in fanworks, most visual in nature, such as fanart, memes, and more. Notably, the game's simple and distinctive art style drew a large number of crossovers in the form of sprite edits and similar fanart, with artists drawing characters from various fandoms in the style of Neko Atsume cats.
