Namesake is a Webcomic created by Isabelle Melançon and Megan Lavey-Heaton. The first installment was posted in September 2010, with updates occurring thrice weekly ever since.

The premise of Namesake is that certain persons are Namesakes, and are thereby empowered to enact or re-enact classic stories commonly believed to be fictional. In truth, however, Namesakes travel to alternate realities in which their stories occur. Thus the land of Oz, in the Namesake setting, has been visited by a whole series of "Dorothies", and Lewis Carroll's Wonderland by a similar series of Alices. This occurs at least in part through the efforts of Writers, persons with the innate ability to create stories which then play out as real to their characters and to the Namesake protagonists.

Namesake's lead characters are Emma and Elaine Crewe, sisters living in present-day Canada. Emma exhibits the powers of a Namesake, while Elaine is eventually revealed to have those of a Writer. An encounter with another Namesake propels Emma into the fictional Land of Oz, where she is greeted as a Dorothy by the natives. While attempting to learn Emma's whereabouts, Elaine and her boyfriend, Ben Kench, are drawn into the ongoing conflict between Calliope, an organization formed to protect Namesakes and Writers, and the Rippers, a rival group which opposes Calliope's activities.

Fandom

The comic has proven sufficiently popular to enable its creators to release multiple print compilations of the strips, and has generated a small body of fanwork (primarily fanart, but including a small body of fanfiction).
