My Dad the Bounty Hunter is an animated sci-fi streamable show on Netflix about an intergalactic family of bounty hunters. The Rolling Stone describes it as "Afrofuturist Marvel"[1] and it has been positively received for its depiction of social issues and black families. My Dad the Bounty Hunter has a small fandom.
Plot
Season 1
Terry is secretly an intergalactic bounty hunter, using the job as a way to afford his two children, Lisa and Sean, a comfortable life with their mother who Terry is separated from. Lisa and Sean accidentally board Terry's ship when he was meant to have them at his house. Realizing all his warp orbs have been left behind because of this mishap, Terry has no choice but to take Lisa and Sean with him on an adventure to track down a bounty and use the money to pay for more warp orbs.
They discover that the bounty is an alien heading a team to free a group of "animals" from a extremally popular theme park world owned by the person who commissioned Terry to capture her. After realizing the "animals" are a race of talking sentient aliens enslaved and devoiced with collars, forced to mine warp orbs, Lisa begs her father to do the right thing and help free them instead. Terry completes the bounty anyway, losing the trust of his daughter who rebels against him.
Ultimately, Terry realizes he has been wrong and helps the enslaved species escape. After scuffling with his ex-bounty hunting partner and his previous employer, the enslaved species are freed for good and its revealed Terry's wife, Tess, knows he is a bounty hunter and herself is an alien. Lisa and Sean are excited about the protect of being half alien. Terry and his family destroy his ex-employer when he shows up at their door using a warp orb against him.
