In most shows, sometimes they skip a chunk of time to a later date, such as a year or so. Some fanfics, especially those based off works with extremely lengthy time skips, try to fill in the gap if what happened in between one point and another. A prominent fandom that writes up fanfics taking place in this missing timeframe is Once Upon a Time, in which the third season had time skip of a year and a plot point being that most characters don't remember what went on during that year, hence referring to it as the "Missing Year".
