Ministry of Magic (also known as MoM) was a Wizard Rock band that originated in 2007 in Ames, Iowa. During the act's heyday, they saw success as one of the genre's most popular acts. A 2010 survey of 125 fans of the genre found that 98% listed Ministry of Magic as one of their favorite bands[1] and, in 2014, one blogger noted that Ministry of Magic was the most profitable wrock act based on ITunes sales.[2] However, scandal ultimately marred the group's reputation in 2014.[2][3]

History

Prior to the band's creation, future members Mark Jennings, Jason Munday, and Aaron Nordyke performed together in a Christian rock band called 38th Parallel.[4]

After 38th Parallel disbanded, Munday founded Ministry of Magic in 2007 with his friends Luke Conard and Ryan Seiler. Later, the band would be joined by Nordyke as well as brothers Mark and Jeremy Jennings.

A 2014 article from The Grand Forks Herald by Melanie McGinnis describes Ministry of Magic's music as follows:

Ministry of Magic has a consistently electronica style, with elements of pop as well. They can digitally record certain parts on the guitar and piano. From there, they add a plethora of effects and electronic sounds with a computer program. And all of their songs deal with some aspect of Harry Potter’s world, and they are usually either about or in the point of view of one or several specific characters.[5]

In 2019, former member Mark Jennings recounted some of the history of the band on the podcast TruthSeekah. Jennings said,

"... Ministry of Magic was really just an excuse to get together and make music and have some fun... that's not to say that Ministry of Magic was all debauchery and silliness... it was never intended to be as big as it got. I was blown away when I joined it just for fun... and all of a sudden we're putting music out on iTunes and we've beaten Owl City in sales... It was a wonderful time to kind of remember who I was, get refocused, and it also afforded me the opportunity.... [to] meet my wife."[1] Mark Jennings on the podcast TruthSeekah, 2/2/2019[6]

According to the Harry Potter Wiki, the band became inactive around 2012 with the members focusing more on their own projects, though the potential for further activities was left open until the band was involved in a major controversy in 2014. Munday finished his final tumblr post with "RIP Ministry of Magic" indicating that the band was no more.[7]

Controversy

Content Warning: This section details descriptions of abuse towards women, including predatory behavior towards underage girls as well as emotional abuse and manipulation. These actions were part of a wider array of "YouTube Abuse" scandals that came to light around 2014.[9] Reader discretion is advised if you should read or research into any of these topics. This section was first compiled by EllieElls99, who was a fan at the time, and she specifically requests this warning be allowed to remain. She hopes that by compiling this information, she can help ensure that individuals like Conard remain deplatformed for good and for these stories to serve as a warning to young fans.

Prelude

From about 2012[10] but reaching a peak in 2014, various YouTubers who had amassed followings of mostly young fans were exposed for a variety of abusive acts such as exploitation, grooming, and other inappropriate behaviors were levied at various YouTubers who had amassed a following of mostly young girls. A detailed blog with source links (many of which are broken but might still be available via the WayBack Machine) can be found at the WordPress blog "YouTube Abuse."

One of the individuals exposed in this wave of allegations was Alex Carpenter, frontman of the wrock band The Remus Lupins who was the roommate of Conard and Munday.[11] A number of the tumblr blog posts detailing Carpenter's actions have since been deleted; however, evidence does remain.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] In 2021, writer Geoff Hutton described Carpenter's pattern of behavior as follows:

The accounts of Carpenter’s behavior tell the story of an opportunist abuser who was very much aware of how popular he was and who got off on trying to prove he could get any girl he wanted by getting them all (no matter how young). Several of the stories told by survivors of Carpenter’s abuse demonstrate a pattern: he would meet underage girls at conventions or online, gain their trust, get what he wanted from them, and then break them down to keep them from having the courage to cut him off when he forced them to do things they didn’t want to or make him admit that he was hurting them.[3]

As of 2024, Carpenter has not updated his YouTube or been active as an influencer on social media since this information was brought to light in early 2014.

Luke Conard

While this situation was unfolding, women began to speak out about the emotional abuse and manipulation they had suffered while involved with Conard. This led to Conard being labeled as an "emotional manipulator" and a "borderline sociopath."[21] These allegations started around March of 2014 (a more specific date is needed).

Kristina Horner

YouTuber Kristina Horner, founding member of the wrock band The Parselmouths and a pioneer of the wizard rock genre in her own right, was an ex-girlfriend of Conard. She and Conard were also in a band called ALL CAPS together. On her tumblr, Horner wrote a post titled "THE TRUTH ABOUT ALL CAPS (YES ANOTHER POST ABOUT DATING YOUTUBERS)."[22] In this post, Horner detailed that she was emotionally abused and manipulated by Conard during their relationship.

Allegedly, according to a friend of Horner's, Conard had sought Horner out by saying that because "Harry Potter music is dying down, we need to start a new band with a popular YouTube Girl."[22] Moreover, during the relationship, Horner began to realize their relationship was simply limited to the band. To make matters worse, Conard also ensured that Horner never received any money from her work on the band's first album, Songs in the Key of Email.[22][23]

In August of 2010, Conard broke off with Horner at the beginning of the Roflcoptour Tour. Horner writes that he forced her to pretend they were still dating publicly to preserve the band's image and avoid telling fans. Meanwhile, he continued to further manipulate Horner, specifically into sleeping with him. She stated that their dynamic "only consisted of three things - performing, sleeping together, and fighting."[22] Conard also started to see other people, but "did not take it well" when Horner attempted to do the same and coerced her into sex to "prove [she] hadn't slept with someone else."[22]

"i wasn’t losing my boyfriend to world of warcraft[24], i was losing my sanity to a manipulative, abusive, selfish guy. i was miserable, i would cry all the time, and my friends were beyond concerned. my friends hated luke. but it was a situation in which i could only help myself - no matter how much they tried to tell me to get the hell out of there, he made me feel like without all caps, i would be nothing. i honestly felt worthless. even though he’d leeched most of his new found success from me, he still made me feel like i owed him." Horner on her relationship with Conard.[22]

Conard also did not believe that Horner was suffering from vocal nodes and pushed her to continue performing, which caused the condition to worsen.[22]

Horner eventually called it quits with Conard around the time she stepped back from music due to her aforementioned health condition. Horner alleges that her final straw was when she discovered that a "mutual friend" she planned to room with in Los Angeles was "also sleeping with Luke behind my back."[22]

Whitney Milam

Inspired by the numerous women coming forward, particularly Horner, Whitney Milam- another YouTuber and ex-girlfriend of Conard- came forward about their relationship on her tumblr blog.[16] Her account appears to have since been deactivated but the post is archived here

Milam met Luke Conard around the summer of 2010 as a "random college girl excited to get the chance to flirt with that cute musician whose work I admire." Milam arranged to interview an unnamed performer in the wizard rock scene, who brought Alex Carpenter along with him. Through Carpenter, Milam met others invovled in the music scene including Conard.[16]

Milam admitted in her post to being the "mutual female friend" who Kristina mentioned as "the catalyst for finally ending her involvement with Luke." At the time, Conard was "already romantically involved with both Kristina and another girl[25] (said other girl was also emotionally devastated by Luke)."[16] Conard manipulated Milam to prevent her from telling Horner the truth. Milam writes that, while she was naive and inexperienced, Conard "was a man in his thirties decades of romantic experience under his belt, and he was a man who knowingly manipulated not one but THREE much younger girls into sleeping with him, lying for him, and screwing up their lives and friendships for him at the same time:"[16]

Though Conard initially broke things off with Milam, after falsely accusing her of giving him an STD (which neither had), relations would eventually continue. Milam wrote that, after Conard broke up with her, she found herself ostracized from most of their mutual friends.[16]

In her post, Milam details one instance of specifically sexual abuse when she was black-out drunk and alleges there were "many others" that she was not comfortable disclosing publicly.[16] Furthermore, she described Conard as "very controlling and manipulative about everything from the clothes I wore to my personal boundaries, implying he would end things with me if I continued to do anything he didn’t like."[16] Conard also continued to cheat on Milam.[16]

Reflecting on the relationship, Milam wrote

"There has been an outrageous cycle of abuse and manipulation of much younger girls by older men with much younger fangirls, most of whom run in the same circles and cover for each others’ shitty behavior, for many years now - and it needs to stop. The power dynamics were/are severely skewed and imbalanced. I am so heartened by the recent outpouring of support for those who have been hurt/are suffering from lasting harm as a result of these screwed up relationships, and hope it continues to the point of disallowing that behavior in the future. There can be value in sharing and talking about these kinds of relationships, especially if it can cause some of those fans to take a second look at unquestioning regard of their idols as well as help put a stop to a destructive cycle that has been ongoing for years."[16]

Apology and Attempted Return to YouTube

After Horner and Milam spoke out, Conard attempted to issue an apology which was poorly received.[26] [27][28] This apology has since been deleted, but was copied and pasted here[29]

By August of 2014, Conard was once again active on social media, trying to gain sympathy by posting photos of a new puppy and promising to be back on YouTube soon.[15]

While fan reaction to these developments was overwhelmingly negative, several other creators still defended Conard and believed he was treated unfairly. These have included Joey Graceffa, Shane Dawson, and Trisha Paytas[30] as well as catrific.[31] [32] Comments made by tumblr users also indicated that some fans still wanted to support Conard and other accused YouTubers after the allegations, but posts actually doing such are nearly impossible to find in June of 2024.[33][34][35]

Conard continued to post YouTube videos, though never to the success he once had. As of June 2024, his last upload was on 14 January 2019.

Jason Munday

In early 2014, Munday does not appear to have been implicated directly in the YouTube Abuse controversy.[36] However, other contemporary controversy did arise.

Response

Jason Munday drew criticism from the community due to his response to the controversies that arose regarding Carpenter and Conard, among others.[37] The actual content of his post in response has yet to be uncovered online, though it included but might not have been limited to tweets capture in this tumblr post. In a now deleted post which was reblogged and added to by another user, tumblr user WrockSnob provided the following commentary on Munday's response:

"YOU. PUBLICLY. DERIDED. A YOUNG WOMAN. FOR FEARING. THE RAPE CULTURE. DENIED THE RAPE CULTURE. AND SPAT IN THE FACE OF EVERY ONE OF YOUR FANS WHO HAS TO LIVE DAILY IN A CULTURE WHERE THEY MUST SIMULTANEOUSLY LIVE IN FEAR AND KNOW THAT IF HORRENDOUS THINGS ARE DONE TO THEM, CHANCES ARE THAT THEY ARE THE ONES WHO WILL BE BLAMED.... PISSING ALL OVER THE WROCK COMMUNITY BECAUSE YOU’RE BUTTHURT THAT PEOPLE DIDN’T TAKE KINDLY TO DISMISSING THE RAPE CULTURE IS LAME AND PETTY BUT HONESTLY I DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT THAT, AND I DON’T THINK ANYONE REALLY SHOULD. WHAT THEY SHOULD CARE ABOUT IS THAT YOU, JASON MUNDAY, ARE A QUALIFIED WORLD-CLASS ASSHOLE. YOU DON’T. GET TO LIVE. WITH A MANIPULATIVE DICKMONGER. AND A PEDOPHILIC RAPIST. AND THEN DENY THE RAPE CULTURE. AND BELITTLE THE FEARS OF THE WOMEN WHO HAVE TO LIVE IN IT. YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON..."[37]

Munday moved back to Iowa and issued a lengthy blog post criticizing the Wizard Rock community.[7] He has not been a public figure since.

Alleged IndieGoGo Campaign Scam

In the summer of 2013, Munday had started an IndieGoGo campaign to fund his third independent album. The campaign raised $6,760 from 201 backers.[38] The highest amounts appear to have been one $500 donation and two $300 donations.[38] Even though ten years have passed as of writing, no such album has ever been released nor is there any evidence that perks were delivered or refunds issued.

Two tumblr posts emerged in 2014, one in March and one in August, claiming that Munday ran off with the nearly $7,000 he had raised from his fans, the majority of whom were very young.[39][40] The post from March, uploaded on a burner titled "StopTakingAdvantageOfFans-Blog" states that:

I noticed him [Munday] reply to one girl about this last week on Twitter where he just said "Hopefully soon" when she asked if he could please update his backers. He said it was taking longer than usual. And that's fine. I understand completely that creative projects take time. The thing I'm disappointed with is the fact that I and several others I know have been in touch with Indigogo since Jason was unresponsive before this and they said he has been completely unresponsive to their emails and phone calls too. They advised me to seek legal action because he has violated their terms of use. But the thing is, most of his fans are young girls who can't afford to pay legal fees. Besides, I don't want to sue Jason Munday, that's absurd. Everyone I know has just pledged small amounts of money ranging from 20-40 dollars, but at the same time, that's our money. He gets to sit at home cashing in our money while he plays video games all day and goes to cons and we have to work minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. We thought we were supporting an artist we love. My issue is that he has not updated us on the progress of this campaign once, not the fact that it is taking longer than expected. I have to wonder too if he only finally replied about this because of all the abuse allegations going on in the community recently and he wanted to cover his butt." [39]

In August, the issue had not been resolved. Tumblr user BetterThanFireWhiskeyyy (potentially the same individual as anonymous blogger from March 2014),[41] wrote the following:

In July of 2013, he [Munday] started an Indigogo campaign to raise money to make a new album. Perks were promised, perks were never delivered... [Munday] has not updated us a single time. I very much doubt he ever plans to make that album. Honestly, after his awful Twitter comments slamming the entire Wizard Rock community, I would never listen to it even if he did deliver.... Jason is a slime bucket and has scammed 200 young girls into giving him money FOR NOTHING. Nearly SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. I thank the powers that be that I only gave 25, but on principle, I'm pissed. What about the girls that gave large sums of money? I've been in contact with Indigogo several times and they essentially say that he has ignored all their attempts to have him pay up. They say that I have to take him to small claims court if I ever want to resolve this. And I'm positive that Jason knew this, knew that his fan base was young girls struggling to rub two pennies together while he sits and plays video games all day in his mansion. He knows we can't afford to take him to court, and that's why he knew he would get away with this. I don't want anything back from him. I just want to voice how shitty of a person I think he is and how this is yet another abuse of power story. I was afraid for a whole year to speak up about this because I fucking idolized him. No more. Please spread this like wildfire just so people can see that trusting Youtubers isn't always safe and to just be careful with that trust. Don't be afraid to speak up about something you feel isn't right. He was taking advantage the whole time and he damn well knew it.[40]

At the time, these claims did not gain widespread steam.

September 2014 Allegations

In September 2014, a post that appears to refer to Munday detailed a toxic relationship in which the poster was cheated on constantly.[42] The poster, named Whitney Lynn [not to be confused with Milam] also mentioned seeing that Munday was communicating with and sharing explicit photos with numerous girls. Whitney wrote, "Some were VERY young. I didn’t know their ages, but I saw pictures of girls on his phone, some naked, some not. I couldn’t verify who these girls were."[43] By this time, Munday was already inactive and had left the community. This post did not gain as much traction as those from earlier that year, and it cannot be confirmed 100% that Munday was being referred to (though it seems likely based on circumstantial evidence).

Aftermath

Although a majority of the members (Nordyke, Sailing, and the Jennings brothers) appear to have avoided being wrapped up in the controversy, YouTube Abuse 2014 effectively marked the end of Ministry of Magic as a band. Reflecting on the band in 2019, Mark Jennings stated:

"... it's [Ministry of Magic] something I was honored to be a part of. I was honored to make music with those guys. We had a lot of fun doing that and I'm pretty proud of some of the stuff we did musically... what happened with that was a lot of the wizard rock bands as they were called would not be very well behaved with younger ladies, not us, but a lot of other ones, and of course, accusations start to fly and impressions start to fly and one of our members [presumably Conard] started getting accused of certain things that were not anything illegal... He basically got accused of being the equivalent of a bad frat boy.... that.... kind of blacklisted us.... It was kind of the end of it anyways..."[2] Mark Jennings on the podcast TruthSeekah, 2/2/2019[6]
