Millie Harcourt/Jean McBrian is a femslash pairing in The Bletchley Circle fandom. The pairing grew in popularity within fandom when the spin-off series, The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco was released.

Canon

Millie and Jean worked together at Bletchley Park during the war, with Jean being the supervisor for the team the remaining members of the group worked in. From flashbacks, they seemed to have a relatively cordial working relationship, though they were not as close as Millie was to Lucy and Susan, due to Jean’s supervisory position.

In the main canon, they meet up again seven years after World War II ended to help Susan solve the pattern of serial murders she has discovered.

In the spin-off show, The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco, Millie convinced Jean to accompany her to America in pursuit of solving the murder of a colleague of theirs during their time at Bletchley Park. Once there, Millie decided to stay while Jean planned on returning to England, causing a brief arc of tension between them. Eventually, Jean opted to stay as well, much to Millie’s delight and they continued to live together.

Fandom

Fandom interest in the pairing first started with the second season of The Bletchley Circle, particularly after the episode, Uncustomed Goods. This was the first case the group worked on after Susan Gray left the show; Susan/Millie had been the bigger pairing in the fandom up to that point.

The fandom around Jean/Millie grew with The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco. Not only did Jean and Millie live together in the US, but there were a number of scenes which fans could draw intimacy interpretations from. For example, the scene where Millie is trying to convince Jean to stay in the US with her is easily interpreted from a perspective of an intimate relationship, and there are multiple scenes where Jean or Millie are in danger or where elements of hurt/comfort are applicable.

Additionally, the San Francisco spin-off made it canonical that Millie was bisexual. As Jean showed little-to-no interest in men and there was a scene where she was clear that getting married was not something she anticipated happening, this has also played into fan-interpretations of Jean as a lesbian or sapphic character.

Fan Commentary

I just watched the scene where Millie and Jean are bickering about Jean not staying in San Francisco and then Millie calls Jean out for driving on the wrong side of the road and my brain just went "I fucking love homosexuality!" 😆
