The Mighty Boosh is a multimedia comedy project begun in 1998 by comedians Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding. The Mighty Boosh began as a live stage show in 1998, but Barratt and Fielding expanded to a radio show in 2001, though they continued touring live through the present. Today their project is best known for its three-season television run on BBC Three (2004-2007). Barratt and Fielding continue to perform standup, and have enjoyed small roles on other television programmes during and after the run of The Mighty Boosh TV series (most notably, Barratt on Nathan Barley and Fielding on The IT Crowd).
The Mighty Boosh is a surrealist comedy show centred around the lives of the two main characters, Howard Moon and Vince Noir. Vince and Howard are best friends, though they have a rather prickly relationship, and seem to have few close relationships apart from one another. They are joined by supporting characters (most prominently the shaman Naboo and his gorilla familiar Bollo). Howard and Vince have one adventure per episode, but major arcs across seasons are absent. Major themes are magic/magical realism, music, and fighting the monster of the week – usually in song format.
Boosh Fandom
Today, Boosh fandom is centred mostly around the Livejournal community Boosh Slash Haven, where one can find fic, fanart, and general squee. The most popular pairing for the show is Howard/Vince[1] which is reasonable as these two main characters live together, and subtext between them abounds. In season three, episode five, they shared a passionate kiss, though this was not referenced later in the series.
A trend in Boosh fandom is that fans tend to migrate naturally to other projects on which Barratt and Fielding have worked together, namely the television show Nathan Barley, which ran for one season on Channel 4 in 2005. Nathan Barley fandom can thus be considered a subset of Boosh fandom. Fans primarily slash the characters Fielding and Barratt played, DJ Jones and Dan Ashcroft.[2]
