Memento Archive is a website that allows users to search for deleted AO3 fanfiction. Its own description states: "Memento Archive, an archive for the recovery of deleted fanfiction."[1] The exact date of its creation is unknown, but the site's own description indicates that it was in 2021.
Allows users to search using:

- Author. It doesn't have to be exact.
- Series.
- AO3 Work ID.
- AO3 Series ID.
All files are epub files.
Controversies
On 10th of July, 2024, the site got discovered by various users stated their frustrations about the site, its alleged "scraping" of AO3 and that authors did not give consent to archive their fics on the site. Since that day, the site gives a screen with a 502 Bad Gateway error.[3]

I don’t get why people are upset by this archive. I mean, I do if you don’t want your work posted somewhere else or just any other reason, it’s perfectly reasonable to ask the site to take down your work, but I see comments about this site being “disrespectful” and “taking it (the site itself) down”? In this very reply section people are happy that they can find works that were deleted that they loved, and one author was happy that they could find works they deleted that they regretted. If you don’t like it, you can ask for your work to be removed from the site. I don’t care, considering I’m putting it on the internet and nothing deleted on the internet is ever deleted. You could probably find like 7 different ways to find deleted Fics, via wayback machine, internet archive or something else, this archive where you can remove your work from is fine. If you don’t like your work being seen, then just don’t post it. Again: nothing deleted on the internet is actually deleted. It’s simply removed from the main way you access them, but you can still access them.[4]

Absolutely. We'd be fine with it if we, the author, were the ones choosing to back up our fics to this archive. But we, the author, are not: the site is making the assumption that they have permission all on its own. And, like you said, when there's ~7 different sites doing the exact same thing when we didn't give permission- it gets exhausting. Locking our fics helps, so I'm trying that out for now. If that ever stops working, than why post at all? I want fanfic to be fun for me. Not draining and worrying over my copyright rights.[5]

Finding out that ALL of my works, including those that are on-going and some that were deleted, have been uploaded to some random "Archive" without my information or consent is definitely not how I wanted my day to go[6]

I’m boosting this. Apparently they scrape (scraped?) AO3. Many of my fics are there and apart from Jo’s and mine, I’ve found those by @kunstpause @curiousthimble @pikapeppa @thebibliosphere and @captainderyn as well - others definitely also will be there. This has been done without consent or notification. I sent them a takedown demand, don’t know if they’ll honour it. But WTF. There’s a reason my fic is on AO3 and AO3 ONLY. And the banger? “An archive for the recovery of deleted fics” - none of them are deleted. And if so? FOR A FUCKING REASON ![7]
