Vidder Intro

Let's see now. I discovered the great and wonderful world of vidding when I was doing my undergrad at NYU. I was studying film and television production and basically creating vids without even knowing it so when I found a random Buffy vid on the internet it really changed my life. In fact it might be one of the most integral discoveries that I have made about myself so I've been vidding for about four years now, since 2006. I started on Windows Movie Maker, then tried to Premier and eventually settled with Sony Vegas (which I definitely recommend to new vidders out there). But I edit on Final Cut at work so it's all a bit jumbled really.

I wouldn't say that I vid primarily for myself (though in the end it's a personal need to Get It Out There is it?) but every film needs an audience and vids can definitely achieve that same level of art, so you need someone to see it. Because ultimately you can't have a discussion with yourself...unless you're crazy. ;)

I've made a few Merlin vids. Life in a Glass House and Don't Talk, Morgana are both Morgana-centric while ...and ladies with pretty hair is a crossover with Legend of the Seeker. You can check out some more of my work at sync_slaying

Excerpts

I always admire your music choices, you pick a lot of really interesting stuff, and I love the way you use artists like Archive, The Knife and Radiohead. How much time does it take you to pick music, or do the ideas start from the songs?

Aw, thanks so much!

Music choice is huuugely important for a vid imo, probably because it shapes the structure of your vid. Most of the time I get the ideas from the songs, but there have been times where I actively searched for songs because I knew I needed something to match a particular concept. The Archive song - "Seamless" - came on shuffle one day when I was dozing on the train coming home from work, and it actually woke me up. In my half-sleep state I remember vividly seeing a heart monitor and that sort of led to thinking about hearts and the one heart and the fic I was struggling to write about Handy so it just rolled from there. "Marble House" was something I was obsessed with for quite some time, and I when a song grips me that hard I actually try and match a fandom to it. This doesn't always work but luckily with that one it did. :) And of course "Life in a Glass House" has been a favorite of mine for some time but I never considered vidding it until I was seeking a song for Morgana, and there's an example of the sought out music shaping a vid.

As far as the actual music, I've found that it's just so much more rewarding to go off the beaten track and choose songs that are a bit odd. That's not to say you can't have fun with a Top 40's tune, but it all depends on the idea you're trying to put forth.

One thing I find works well at generating really great results is choosing a song that seems opposite to your fandom as it allows you to explore the story in a new light. And talk about things that generally might not be talked about.

So yay to music! Thank you for the question!

If all but one of your vids are erased from history, never to return (you can't reconstruct them, nor can you get anyone else to do it for you), which one would you keep and why?

Well this one's not that hard actually. I'd keep Marble House. Besides it being a very personal vid, the one I shed the most blood for, I think it also can be used for, I dunno, greater purposes. Maybe to teach someone something, maybe to have a discussion. Help keep vidding alive, so to speak. So I'd want to keep a vid that serves the greater good. :)
