Excerpts

How long have you been writing fan fiction and/or making fan art and/or whatever else (vids, knitted goods, pornographic gingerbread cookies)?

I've been writing it a lot longer than I knew it was fan fiction. When I was around seven or eight I wrote an epic (in other words: like fifteen pages) Narnia story featuring me and my best friend. But I would say that I didn't begin in earnest until a few years ago, around 2003. Nothing gets the creative juices flowing like grad school, apparently. :D

Hmm, let's see. The first honest-to-goodness fandom I got into was definitely Harry Potter. I wrote a little, and read a ton. I received a thorough education in the language of fandom, genres, slash, etc., which has served me well over the years. :D I read quite a bit of West Wing fic in college, and then Good Omens was my fandom of choice for a while. I was also a mod and player at the milliways_bar RPG for a few years, which was most definitely a fandom of its own. If you love crossovers, that's a great place.

What do you enjoy most about SGA and/or SGA fandom?

Seriously, it's so open and friendly. Nowhere have I seen the kind of crankypants elitism I've experienced in other fandoms. The show itself is great fandom material because... it kind of feels like watching a first draft, which just begs you to go write the final one. Which, I guess, is a bit of a slam to the writers, but you know what I mean. I hope. I guess what I'm saying is that it's full of potential. Yes! That's much more politically correct. :D

Why do you ship McKay/Sheppard? What draws you to the pairing, what do you like and dislike? Favourite scenes or episodes? Quotes? Screencaps? What other SGA pairings do you ship?

The chemistry between the two characters eclipses anything else on the show. I like that on the surface they're polar opposites -- gutsy pilot, loudmouth brain -- but that underneath they have a lot more in common than they realize, and bring out the absolute best in one another. I think John's line at the end of "Hide and Seek" -- "That was a Hail Mary" -- was the moment that sold me; that was the moment John threw away his preconceptions and allowed Rodney to become something else.

Other SGA pairings... I am a fan of the Team ship, I have to say. The four of them mesh so well that I can see them coming together romantically, too. I like Rodney/Teyla; it can be very sweet and unexpected. Ronon/Keller is also a good one. Their on-screen chemistry is so much better and more interesting that what Rodney and Keller had. I'll never be able to fathom why the writers decided on that one.
