The Editorials

By J. Random Smith

No big production numbers, and no blowing of my own horn; I won't have it. However, at this time, I would like to give credit where credit is due.

MATRIX simply would not have been had it not been for the lady who taught me all the do's and dont's of_how to win friends and influence Hamillfen, my fannish mentor and partner-in-crime, Nikki Cadwell. Thanx a million, Nikki!

MATRIX is dedicated to Mr. Hamill, not a 'California Clone' who happens to perform every now and again, but an actor of immense talent and versatility. Mr. Hamill is a special person, but this is not meant as excessive praise. Not only does he show creative genius in his art, but, as a man, he bubbles with life and energy which seems to lend itself to those people who need it, and he radiates an air of kindness and good spirits which helps to lift those who meet him from whatever depths that life with its hard knocks may have pushed them.

Though Mr. Hamill is obviously a special person, he is still very much like the rest of us. This is shown in his struggle to get to where he is now. He has his faults, just like the rest of us, as is evidenced by that STAR WARS star trip that went to his head just before his marriage. I think that the best way to speak of Mr. Hamill would be to bring to mind some words spoken by King Arthur in Lerner and Lowe's Broadway musical CAMELOT: "He is one of what we all are; just a drop in the great blue motion of the sunlit sea. But it seems that some of the drops sparkle. Some of them DO sparkle. That's a helluva sparkle, Mr. Hamill!"

Greetings, fellow Hamillfen!

MATRIX began for me at MediaWest*Con I (May, '81) in the Dealers' room, when I came across a great many 'zines dedicated to Harrison Ford, but not one dedicated to Mark Hamill! This seemed unjust - I knew there were fans of Mark's 'out there', so Pat Gonzales and I organized an impromptu meeting at the con to find them--and find them we most certainly did! --I have to reveal, with all due modesty, that the 'zine "Shooting Star" developed from this meeting, after Gonzo and I had announced our intention to do a 'zine and asked for contributions.

However, I, at least, feel there's room for all... and, at MediaWest*Con II, Jeff Smith and I went on with the original plan to put out a quality 'zine dedicated to our favorite actor, even if it might be a one-shot publication.

After two years, we're ready to go to press. It wasn't easy; we asked that stories about a certain kid from a galaxy far, far away be kept to a minimum, and Mark's other characterizations are not simple to write about. Therefore, our heart-felt thanks go to our contributors who, of course, were the real people who made this 'zine possible.

Since I believe in giving credit where credit is due, I should like to make it known that Jeff did most of the work on this 'zine himself. I merely gave suggestions here and there, did my best at proof-reading, and got lucky enough to acquire our front cover from Marilyn Johansen in the form of a Christmas gift! (in July?!? Well, that's another story. . .) So, if you like this 'zine, tell Mr. Smith!

But enough of this idle chatter -- turn the page and get on to the good stuff!

And may the Force be with us all!
