Magic: The Gathering is a collectible trading card game. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, over a hundred sets have been released for the game since its initial 1993 release. Millions of fans keep the game alive through collecting, discussion, and competitive play.
Canon
The story of Magic: The Gathering takes place across several "planes", or parallel universes, each of which has its own fantasy aesthetic. Planeswalkers are powerful mages capable of traveling between planes. Each player takes on the role of a planeswalker, and each match is a mage's duel. There are also fictional planeswalkers, cards and characters who take on important roles within Magic's story. Said story is told through a combination of flavor on cards, supplemental novels, trailers, and stories posted to Wizards of the Coast's website.
Collectible Cards and Fannish Interest
- The Power Nine and Black Lotus. In the Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited sets of Magic (its earliest incarnations), a set of nine particularly powerful cards were created. The most famous and coveted of these cards is the Black Lotus. Considered to be one of the most versatile and powerful cards in the game, this card has been banned in most formats, yet copies of it can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. The card has become iconic within the community.
