Excerpts
"What about Wintershock as a pairing appeals to you? I think it’s a collection of different things. Part of it is that Darcy would treat him like a regular person, without the expectations that come with being someone who knew him before or wanted him to be something he wasn’t sure he could be again. She’s also very mellow and funny while he’d be in a sullen, wary state for a while, so their interactions would be really interesting as she coaxes him into a comfort zone. They’re both loyal too. Darcy stuck around with Jane, despite everything, helped open portals to other places, all in an effort to get her back. Bucky and Steve. ‘nough said. And then there’s the dichotomy of Bucky being who he was, turned into who he became, having spent much of his earlier life watching out for Steve, up against Darcy who, in the face of danger, decides to save a stray dog before focusing on her own life. I just think there’s a really interesting sort of balance there that they could find with each other."
"Do you have any specific Wintershock headcanons that you’ve written into your fics or seen on Tumblr/in someone else’s fic? I like to think he’d draw comfort from her normality. She isn’t super in any way; she’s normal and average and comfortable with that. So they could just sit and watch TV or he could hand her things as she cooked or baked (I have another headcanon that she has a shit-ton of family recipes she likes to whip up at random), or hand her wool as she knitted. It’s just one of those things, where it’s not anything mission related or save-the-damsel or anything like that. It’s being able to be quiet and breathe and being out in the open while she goes about her regular day and just includes him in it."
"Of the stories that you’ve written concerning them, which one is your favorite and why? It’s a toss up between “and I wonder (if everything could ever be this way forever)” and “so you think you can tell (heaven from hell).”
'heaven from hell’ ends on a much, much sadder note, but it’s really the middle that I love. It’s building their life up together and creating this very happy, healthy couple that have found a balance in each other and aren’t perfect. they’re each strange in their own ways and have their quirks and they’ve adapted to those. it was an exploration of how life can end abruptly, when you last expect it and maybe when it’s least deserved. but it happens, and there’s not always time to prepare, and all you’re left with is the memories of something amazing and beautiful, but, ultimately, lost.
“and I wonder” turned out to be one of my favorites I’ve ever written. I just love the exploration of Bucky’s character. His wariness in the beginning and his appreciation for Darcy’s candor. I like their inside jokes and their rituals and how he moves at a pace he’s comfortable with. I like his friendships with Steve and Sam and that sometimes he agrees with their view of things and sometimes he doesn’t, because he’s his own person who sees the world through his own eyes, which is a statement of his agency just as much as everything else. I just really loved writing him in that fic and figuring out who I felt he was and how he could grow, both with, and independent of, Darcy."
"What Wintershock fic by someone else would you recommend to others to read? What about this fic appeals to you? I think I really fell in love with this ship through reading Polexia_Aphrodite’s fics, so anything by them because each and every story just resonates. So real and deep and beautifully written. And since I realized they were an OTP through reading Wynn’s fic, I’ll also recommend the “That Which You Seek” series, as well as anything else she writes. And a third, because it’s underappreciated and so, so well written, “The Good Soldier” by itskathybabe. The visual this story creates as I’m reading is just amazing!"
