Lost in Translation is a Webtoon comic focusing on the fictional Kpop group Mayhem. The main character is Jaewon (also known by his stage name, Wyld), and his other group members are Daehyun, Dongho, and Minsoo.
To start off each "season" (story-arc volumes), Jjolee has partnered with musicians to create in-universe music for the fictional group.
Plot Synopsis
Lost in Translation follows the main character, Ahn Jaewon, who is part of the fictional K-pop group Mayhem. Although on the outside he has a sunny disposition, he is being emotionally manipulated (and at times, physically abused) by the CEO of Mayhem's company High Class Entertainment, Mr. Park. The CEO forces Jaewon to adopt a controversial public persona, one that is often seen in scandalous positions (such as entering a night club to meet with members of girl groups). Photos of said activities are often taken out of context, and the activities themselves are always innocent, but the CEO uses the public's misconstruing of the events to help push Mayhem's image into the public eye.
However, going along with the CEO's plan continually backfires against Jaewon. He is often unable to go into public spaces without being faced with ridicule, and although his own group was originally skeptical of the tabloid articles, they begin to have an increasingly difficult time believing that Jaewon was innocent. Jaewon does not reveal what he has gone through to the group members as he does not want to ruin Mayhem for them or for their fans; this includes hiding death threats he has received from fans. Although it is difficult for Jaewon, and he is put through many trialing situations, he is able to confront the CEO with the help of his members.
Creator & Fans interaction
This article or section needs expansion. |
The creator of the Webtoon, Jjolee, often responds to fan tweets by replying or liking them. She often reposts fanart or fanfiction on Twitter, often including positive comments on the quality of work. She has also taken note of popular fan theories that appeared on Twitter, and although she does not confirm nor deny them, she does often leave cryptic comments that keeps fans excited. In addition to this, Jjolee used to maintain a Lost in Translation discord, which eventually closed down due to various reasons. She did later on join other Discord servers, such as the Lit Fic Discord server (which was primarily for readers and writers of Lost in Translation fanfiction).
Multimedia Storytelling
The fictional group Mayhem has had real music created for it by real artists, which has been twice for the Webtoon. The first song was "Find a Way" by YooLee.[1] The second was "Be the Change", which featured four singers to represent the members, YooLee, eaJ, SooYoon, and Eliit.[2]
While the arc of the story is told through the webtoon, accompanying twitter webpages for the four members of Mayhem post selcas as if they are the characters, and interact with their fans.
Fan accounts also exist for Mayhem, such as @wyldsimp, which mimic the same format as other kpop fan accounts do for their biases.
Fandom
Fanvids
A unique form of fan-creation was line distribution videos. This is a common fandom activity for fans of kpop groups, as members are assigned certain "parts" to sing where the attention is usually on them. Line distribution videos are ways to see who gets time to shine (if they have a lot of lines) and if the way parts are distributed is fair.
Fanfiction
The fanfiction community for Lost in Translation is relatively large compared to other Webtoons, which is part due to the overlap with the K-pop RPF fandoms and in part due to the community that was created around fanfiction. As mentioned, Jjolee supports fanfiction writers; in a Twitch stream, she offered to read through the fanfiction of several writers in the fandom. Those fanfiction were chosen by writers who were part of the LiT Fic Discord sever, a community for fanfiction readers and writers.
