The Littlest Pet Shop 2012 fandom covers the titular cartoon from 2012-2016. LPS 2012 is the tag those in the cartoon's fandom use to differentiate themselves from the Littlest Pet Shop YouTube community based off the toys and kidcore aesthetic.

The first TV series aired in 1995 but the show would not be a major source of fandom activity until its second iteration in 2012, which is where LPS 2012 stems from. It aired to mixed reception, though it's claimed to be one of Hasbro's top preforming shows according to the LPS 2012 wiki. A third series released in 2018 called Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own (LPS:AWOOO or just AWOOO), which more resembled the style of the older 2005 toys, but was not nearly as popular as the 2012 series.[1] Both LPS 2012 and LPS:AWOOO can be considered microfandoms, though LPS 2012 slightly less so than LPS:AWOOO.

Fandom

Littlest Pet Shop toys are, arguably, much more popular of a fandom community than the 2012 show. Upon searching for Littlest Pet Shop online (including YouTube, Tumblr, and search engines), the toys are first and foremost the result, with only fanart of the 2012 show sparsely. This includes both toy collectors, customizers, and the ever popular LPS YouTube videos. The tag Littlest Pet Shop 2012, or just LPS 2012, can be used to narrow down the focus on the 2012 show's fandom. The fandom has a marginal community on Tumblr, with most of the fanart being located on DeviantART in LPS 2012 dedicated groups.

Fans of LPS and My Little Pony compared the two shows, enough so that a DeviantART user named RussellFergusonFan1 made a stamp that said "LPS is NOT a MLP rip-off" on Sept 1, 2014.[2] Then, a journal entry from the DeviantART group "LPSFans4life" in 2016 said: "Honetsly i think both mlp and lps are nice there both great shows. They both are created by hasbro studios and both have the toys! There all super great so guys dont hate on lps or mlp, remember that they are created by the same person and will always be and i hope this changes your mind ~A MLP and LPS Fan."[3] There are a handful of other LPS fan groups on DeviantART, including one that coined the fandom name "Petters," which is a shortened version of "Petshoppers."[4] However, Petshoppers doesn't appear much outside of DeviantART and vaguely on YouTube, and searching it on Tumblr brings up no results.

"The Littlest Pet Shop" on AO3 has 41 fanfics in it, many which are crossovers. A fanfic from Nov 2020 titled "The Boys Get a Makeover" has talking in the tags that read: "This show needs more fanfics and should not be forgotten about," "In fact the whole LPS franchise needs more love outside of YouTube series made with the toys," "As much as I love those the cartoons are great too." This means the small fandom is aware of just how obscure it is next to other fandoms.[5] Littlest Pet Shop is more popular on Fanfiction.net than it is on AO3, with 627 fanfics.

Shipping

The LPS 2012 community uses both portmanteau for their ship names (as in Vinnil) and an 'x' between names (as in Vinnie x Sunil). Vinnie and Sunil appear to be one of the more popular ships, based on an influx of fanart for the ship compared to other, more obscure pairings.

  • Vinnil or Sunnie- Vinnie/Sunil
  • Vinnussell- Vinnie/Russell
  • Rusinka or Russinka- Minka/Russell
  • Pepinka- Pepper/Minka
  • Vinnenny- Penny/Vinnie
  • Sepper- Pepper/Sunil
