Lifeline, The Spirit of the Enterprise, Gathering Storms, The Silent Cry, A Major Crisis Amongst the Ursus Major Miners is a 150-page Star Trek: TOS gen zine with stories by Kay Stagg.
All of the stories, including the novel, predominately feature Kirk.
Contents
- Lifeline ("Kirk is sent down to an idyllic planet by McCoy for rest and relaxation after the stress and trauma caused by Doctor Adams on the Tantalus Colony. Unfortunately he sends Kirk into even more stress and trauma - only Spock's mental link with Kirk can save him.") (2)
- The Spirit of the Enterprise ("A short story about Kirk and his love and affinity for his ship and First Officer.") (35)
- Gathering Storms ("The Enterprise is ordered into a forbidden zone which is hazardous to all space craft due to ion storms. Once there, Kirk discovers something which causes more than one storm, not only in his mind but also in Starfleet and the Federation.") (45)
- The Silent Cry ("Spock helps Kirk cope with the over dose of stimulants after they have destroyed the amoeba.") (reprinted from Mind Meld #6) (134)
- A Major Crisis Amongst the Ursus Major Miners ("It doesn't take Kirk long to solve a mining dispute.") (reprinted from Mind Meld #6) (137)
Reactions and Review
There are five stories of varying length here. Three have never been in print; two appeared in Mind Meld VI in 1991.
I always enjoy Kay Stagg's work and this zine is no exception. The fact that I haven't a favourite story in the publication is a testament to the quality of all the stories, which are actually very different from each other.
Lifeline is a hurt/comfort story. Kirk is on leave after a very draining mission. He seeks solace in the company of a girl named Liz with whom he develops a close relationship. Unfortunately Liz is not a)! she seems to be...
The Spirit of Enterprise examines Kirk's relationship with his ship through his career; for the sake of the story the Enterprise takes Human form.
Gathering Storms is a mystery story of a type which Kay Stagg does very well There are lots of twists in the plot which kept me guessing until very near the end I am not going to hint at what the story is about - it would spoil it. Suffice it to say that the storms are both literal and metaphorical and the story raises some moral issues which remain unresolved, and which actually made me uncomfortable - this was meant, not a flaw in the story. Anyway, I want a sequel???
A Silent Cry is lovely. The cry is Kirk's, Spock provides the solution, and the story is set after the Amoeba incident.
A Major Crisis Amongst the Ursus Major Miners is very short and very clever, based as it is on word play.
Kay Stagg has a very readable style and her characterisation of Kirk, Spock and McCoy fits in with how I see them. All her stories are exploring relationships, but the is good at inventing plots; her zine Too Many Avenues remains one of my favourite reads. [1]
