Letters from the Sky is a charity zine dedicated to the relationship between Aerith Gainsborough and Zack Fair from Final Fantasy VII.

About

Letters From the Sky is a fanzine dedicated to the relationship between Zack Fair and Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII. This fanzine aims to capture the tragic beauty of these two: from their serendipitous encounter to the memories they leave behind. Their story is one of dreams—a hope to see that blue sky; a vow to protect; a wish to be together again. They offer one another a gift, a purpose, and words that resonate like a solemn hymn. For that bed of flowers beckons them once more, within those letters from the sky.[1]

Interest Checks opened on July 4 to July 24, 2021 [2]. Over 200 responses was reported to have been submitted[3]. Contributors could apply for the project from July 30 to August 27, 2022[4].

Preorders opened from January 5 with the following pricing tiers[5]:

  • Tiny Wishes ($35 USD) - Physical Zine, Mini Print, Bookmark, Die-cut stickers, Sticker Sheet, Stretch Goals
  • Flower Wagon ($45 USD) - Physical Zine, Mini Print, Bookmark, Die-cut stickers, Sticker Sheet, Buttons, Acrylic Charm, Stretch Goals
  • 89 Letters ($55 USD) - Physical Zine, Mini Print, Bookmark, Die-cut stickers, Sticker Sheet, Buttons, Acrylic Charm, Acrylic Standee, Washi Tape, Letter from Aerith, Digital Bundle Items, Stretch Goals

The "89 Letters" bundle was noted to be an exclusive bundle and was only limited to 89 orders to keep in line with the theme. Stretch goals included a memo pad at 50 orders, an enamel pin at 100 orders, and a silver foil stamping on the zine cover at 150 orders[6]. Preorders were expected to end on February 9, 2022, but the period was later extended to February 16 in hopes of reaching the third stretch goal[7].

A giveaway for a digital copy of the zine was run in collaboration with the zine tracker account AniZines beginning on January 26, 2022[8]. The winner of this giveaway is unknown. In honor of Aerith's birthday, another giveaway for a free copy of the sold out "89 Letters" bundle was run from February 7 to February 9, 2022[9]. The winner was announced to be Twitter user BouncyMouse on February 13[10].

Shipping began on June 7[11]. All orders, physical and digital orders, were announced to have been shipped on June 27, 2022[12].

On June 16, 2022, the project announced a flash sale in celebration of Final Fantasy VII's 25th anniversary, putting up seven "Reunion" special bundles containing the full bundle and stretch goals for $50 USD[13]. The bundles sold out within hours. Leftover sales started later on August 5[14]. Sales lasted until November 22, 2022[15].

On November 27, the project announced that $1,887.26 USD was donated to Conservation International[16].
