Laurel and Hardy were a British-American comedy team consisting of Englishman Stan Laurel (1890–1965) and American Oliver Hardy (1892–1957). Both had successful film and writing careers before teaming up, with their first appearance together in 1927 in the silent short film Putting Pants on Philip. They made the transition to "talkies" in the 1930s and continued in film until 1957, when they returned to the stage. In total, they made 107 films: 32 short silent films, 40 short sound films, and 23 full-length feature films. Their name has become shorthand for a slapstick comedy style, as iconic as their bowler hats and black suits.
